Project Heal
Project Heal’s mission is to change the broken healthcare system in the US that prevents many people from having the ability to access the care they need in order to achieve recovery - they aim to “provide life-changing support to people with eating disorders who the system fails” while also advocating for systemic change. Project Heal recognizes that many individuals face financial and insurance obstacles, but also systemic oppression and bias; Project Heal is doing valuable and necessary work to bring attention to the fact that EDs affect people of every socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, body size, etc. This website has a ton of incredibly useful resources, including educational tools and services to help with treatment placement. There is also a great blog that covers a diverse range of topics.
Brianna Wiest @briannawiest
Anyone who has come across Brianna Wiest's writing will agree that her work is powerful. I first discovered Brianna on Instagram and was captivated. She is a best-selling author of multiple books, including the wildly popular 101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think. I really respect Brianna's ability to capture and put into words the messiness that accompanies not being where you want, while also embracing the growth that occurs in the midst of discomfort. Brianna's writing often reminds me to remain hopeful about the future. I also have a blog post where I discuss some of Brianna’s posts that have been most impactful for me and my own recovery journey.
Psychology Today
I’ve used Psychology Today’s “Find a Therapist” tool to get connected with licensed mental health professionals each time I’ve moved to a new city. This tool allows you to apply numerous filters based on your preferences, including whether you’d like to meet online or in-person, the specialties and modalities you’re interested in your therapist having experience with, what types of insurance they accept, and more. I’ve also used Psychology Today to find a psychiatrist who is in-network with my insurance. I’ve had great success using this resource, and I especially appreciate the ability to read through providers’ bios and qualifications. Therapy has been a critical component of my healing journey and I highly recommend exploring your options when it comes to mental health support!
We The Urban @wetheurban
This is my favorite account on Instagram. I often feel like every single post contains affirmations and reminders that speak directly to me. I also enjoy occasionally using We the Urban’s posts as jumping-off points when journaling. Founded by Willie Greene, this account uplifts marginalized voices, prioritizes the importance of inclusivity and diversity, and celebrates the beauty of Black community. We the Urban also has a debut book full of empowering affirmations that can be pre-ordered here.
Sarah Rzemieniak
Founded by former dietician and current ED recovery coach, Sarah Rzemieniak Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching provides a variety of resources and coaching services for those in recovery. While I personally have not used this platform for coaching, I have utilized the blog, which I have found supremely helpful. Specifically, I would recommend Sarah’s posts on navigating body image distress during ED recovery and the concept of resilience and having compassion for past versions of ourselves. This free blog covers a variety of topics - many of which have resonated deeply for me. You can also learn more about the services Sarah and her team offer here.
Brianna Pastor (they/them/she/her) @briannapastor
Brianna Pastor’s Instagram page is another one of my very favorites. Brianna is a queer author and poet, and their writing is thoughtful, poignant, and comforting. Brianna explores many themes, including self-compassion, healing, grief, identity, and trauma. I deeply appreciate how she is able to articulate her emotions in such a beautiful way. Brianna is also the author of Good Grief, a collection of resonant poems that is available here.
It can be difficult to know how to best support a loved one who is in ED recovery.
